Can I Deduct My Work Clothes? Hidden Workwear Tax Breaks Explained

Is your work gear a tax-deductible business expense? Many taxpayers leave money on the table because they don't realize that specialized clothing can be written off. However, the IRS is very specific about what qualifies. In this video, Julio breaks down the “Workwear Rule” and why keeping your receipts is critical for your end-of-year tax planning.

The Two-Part Test for Deductibility

For your clothing to be tax-deductible, it must meet two strict criteria:

  1. It is required for your work: Your employer must mandate the specific clothing or uniform as a condition of your employment.
  2. It is NOT suitable for everyday wear: This is the “Street Wear Test.” If you can reasonably wear the item to a grocery store or a social event without looking like you're in a uniform, it generally won't qualify. This is why scrubs, theatrical costumes, and safety gear are often deductible, but business suits are not—even if you only wear them for work.

Examples of Deductible Workwear:

  • Medical Professionals: Scrubs and specialized nursing shoes.
  • Warehouse & Construction: Steel-toed boots, hard hats, and high-visibility safety vests.
  • Uniformed Services: Delivery driver uniforms, police/fire uniforms, and branded clothing with company logos.
  • Maintenance: The cost of cleaning and maintaining these specialized clothes (like dry cleaning for a pilot's uniform) can also be deductible!

Important Note for 2025:

Under current federal tax law (TCJA), W-2 employees generally cannot deduct unreimbursed employee expenses like work clothes on their federal returns. However, if you are self-employed, a 1099 contractor, or a business owner, these are valid business expenses that can be claimed on your Schedule C. Additionally, some states still allow these deductions for employees, so always verify with your CPA.
